Mexico Beach Florida is one of my favorite places on Earth. After graduating college, I decided to call it home in 2005. It’s one of the most beautiful and peaceful places you will find. Mexico Beach was founded in the 1950’s and has been a family favorite beach for generations. There are height restrictions on building which have kept the big motels and condos away. You won’t find any chain restaurants or even a red light. You will find big, uncrowded, white sandy beaches, locally owned restaurants offering great fresh seafood, and a friendly mix of full time residents and vacationers. It’s not a big town, but you can find about anything you need at our local stores. The larger town of Port St. Joe is just 11 miles to the East and Panama City is about 25 miles to the West.
We have a number of fun festivals in the area including the Gumbo Festival, the Mexico Beach Artificial Reef Association Fishing Tournament, the annual Art and Wine Festival and the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony. I enjoy participating in the Gumbo Festival which raises money for our 4th of July fireworks show. My team have won multiple times and always have the most fun.
The fishing in Mexico Beach is world class and the reason I began coming to the area as a young child. My father and a number of other volunteers started the Mexico Beach Artificial Reef Association. They have helped raise over $1,000,000 and deployed over 100 reefs that you can learn about and get the coordinates to at www.mbara.org. Red Snapper are very abundant at the reefs along with grouper, amberjack, triggerfish, and many other fun to catch species. For those without a boat, there is good surf fishing from the beach, canal, or newly expanded 822 ft pier for pompano, flounder, Spanish mackerel, and whiting.
Don’t just take my word for it. Come experience the place I am lucky to call home and the place that families visit year after year. You won’t regret it and may end up calling it home yourself.
